Originally a 13th-century water castle, the complex was transformed into a four-winged Renaissance palace with extensive fortifications by the Pernštejn family. The building displays a mix of Gothic and Renaissance architectural features and has preserved interior elements such as knight's halls, painted coffered ceilings and wall paintings.
The site houses the East Bohemian Museum and the East Bohemian Gallery, with permanent historical displays as well as temporary exhibitions. The museum complex includes distinct circuits named the Pernštejn Residence and the Lapidarium, and the institution organises seasonal activities such as Advent markets and workshops.
The castle complex is recognised as a National Cultural Monument. Architectural and museum functions coexist within the historic palace structure, which reflects its development from a medieval water castle to a late Gothic and early Renaissance residence.
