This 7.88 square kilometre ice field is one of the largest glacial plains in the Alps, situated at an elevation of 2,927 metres within the Wildstrubel massif. It is a plateau glacier spanning the border of the Bernese Oberland and the Valais. Recent observations by GLAMOS and the Swiss Commission for Cryosphere have documented significant volume loss due to climate change, heat waves, and reduced snow depth. The area also faces geographical challenges related to glacial lake drainage.
The glacier is accessible via the Crans-Montana ski area and functions as a year-round hub for mountain activities. The plateau provides terrain for cross-country skiing and summer skiing. Summit hikes and glacier excursions lead to vantage points such as the Pointe de la Plaine Morte, which offers panoramic views of the Valais Alps and the Rhône Valley.
High-altitude conditions and the glacial environment necessitate proper equipment for trekking and sports. While the plateau is a destination for skiing and hiking, the changing ice conditions and melting are subjects of ongoing scientific monitoring.
