Built in 1478 or 1479 by the Sforza dukes, this castle is a significant example of late medieval military architecture. It stands as part of a triple-fortress system designed to defend the Ticino Valley and the strategic Alpine pass. Unlike other nearby fortifications, this structure is characterized by a simple geometric design and remains unconnected to the city's defensive walls.
The interior houses the Museum of Ticinese Arts and Popular Traditions. A notable feature is the 17th-century Sala Emma Poglia, a historic wooden room. The castle also functions as a venue for temporary exhibitions, providing insight into both medieval defensive history and regional culture.
Situated on a rocky promontory, the site provides panoramic views of the surrounding area. It is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its historical and cultural significance.
