This Baroque castle was constructed in 1773 by the Swedish General-Lieutenant Johann Ludwig von Hordt on the foundations of a 14th-century fortress. Throughout its history, the structure underwent significant expansions and renovations directed by Friedrich Wilhelm IV and the architect Ludwig Persius. The building is situated within an extensive park designed by the landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné.
Once a residence of the Prussian crown, the site hosted notable figures such as the composer Felix Mendelssohn. After serving various functions, including a period as a care facility, the property now operates as a museum with restored grounds. It is officially recognized as part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. The organization Ars Sacrow is based at the castle and organizes cultural events.
