The site is a small, face brick house where Nelson Mandela and his family resided between 1946 and the 1990s. Also known as the Nelson Mandela National Museum, the building was established as a commemorative site in 1997 and is managed by the Soweto Heritage Trust. It serves as a center for research and the preservation of the Mandela family legacy and the history of the South African struggle.
The interior features original furnishings, artwork, and personal memorabilia. Historical exhibits include collections of photographs and artifacts that document the resistance against apartheid. The museum commemorates values such as human rights and reconciliation while documenting the life of the anti-apartheid leader.
The property is open to the public. It provides an account of the residence and its former occupants during a significant period of the 20th century.
