Established in 1774, this institution serves as the central library of the University of Ljubljana and the primary repository for Slovenia's written heritage. The current monumental building was designed by architect Jože Plečnik in 1930–31 and constructed between 1936 and 1941. In 2021, the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the architect's cultural legacy.
The library's extensive collection includes over 1.3 million books, 8,700 manuscripts, and numerous multimedia resources. As of 2011, it maintained subscriptions to approximately 7,900 periodicals. The building is considered one of the most significant architectural achievements by Jože Plečnik and stands as a major cultural monument.
As the largest library in the country, it functions as a central cultural and scientific institution. The landmark structure serves as a key site for the preservation of historical manuscripts and academic resources.
