This historic complex is the largest monument in the region and served as the residence of the prince-bishops for centuries until 1796. The site consists of three main architectural sections: the medieval Castelvecchio, the Renaissance Magno Palazzo, and the historic Torre Aquila. The castle functioned as both a fortress and a palatial residence before being converted into a museum site.
The interior houses the Provincial Gallery of Art and a national museum featuring archaeological collections, historical artifacts, and a pinacotheca. One of the most significant artistic features is the Ciclo dei Mesi (Cycle of the Months), a series of Gothic frescoes located within the Eagle Tower. These paintings document historical and artistic events spanning from prehistory to the nineteenth century.
The property covers an area of over 6,000 square meters and includes a historic garden. As a National Monument, it hosts temporary exhibitions and documents the cultural heritage of the territory. The site is open to the public and functions as a museum complex documenting the evolution of local residences and manors.
