The site is a historic industrial area dating back to the 11th century where leather is processed and dyed by hand using traditional manual methods. It consists of open-air tanning pits and drying areas used for the curing of animal hides. This active center of leather production is designated as a Moroccan Cultural Heritage Site.
The grounds include Bab Debbagh, a principal gate constructed during the Almoravid period around 1126 AD. The structure is historically significant as the only gate named after the local leather-tanning craft. It features a complex defensive architectural layout with an S-shaped design incorporating five bends and multiple courtyards.
While the area is open for observation, activities are frequently associated with unauthorized local guides and sales pitches from leather shops. The site remains a significant cultural landmark where traditional industrial heritage continues to be practiced.
