This site is a unique volcanic chimney and vent formed by a strombolian volcano, reaching a depth of approximately 100 meters. Unlike traditional lava tubes, it consists of a vertical conduit that allows for descent into the interior of an ancient volcanic structure.

The interior is notable for its rare silica-based stalactites and stalagmites. At the bottom of the cavern lies a subterranean lagoon with crystal-clear water. The area also supports a diverse endemic ecosystem, contributing to its status as a protected regional natural monument since 1987.

The monument is open to the public, and guided tours are available for exploring the geological formations. It represents a significant geological site within the Azores archipelago.
