Igreja de Santa Maria

This historic red-brick church dates back to the 1100s, making it the oldest public building in the city. Originally constructed in a Romanesque style, the structure underwent significant reconstruction in the 15th century to adopt its current Gothic appearance. It transitioned from a Catholic place of worship to a Lutheran church following the Reformation.

The interior houses a rich collection of medieval and Renaissance artifacts. Notable pieces include a baptismal font from the 14th century and an intricately detailed altarpiece dating to the 15th century. The building is also recognized for its collection of historical organs, reflecting its long-standing musical tradition.

The church is closely associated with the renowned composer and organist Dietrich Buxtehude, who served here. As an active site within the Church of Sweden, the building hosts regular religious services, baptisms, and confirmations. It also serves as a venue for cultural events, including the World Choir Games, and facilitates activities like pilgrim walks.
