The Cretto di Burri is a monumental landscape artwork designed by the artist Alberto Burri as a memorial for a town destroyed by an earthquake in 1968. Constructed between 1984 and 2015, the installation covers approximately 85,000 square meters, making it one of the largest contemporary artworks in the world.
The artwork was created by compacting and cementing the rubble of the original buildings into massive white concrete blocks. These blocks are separated by a series of fissures that follow the layout of the original street grid. The structure reaches a height of 150 meters and serves to preserve the historical memory of the site.
This land art sculpture serves as a place of remembrance. The project integrates the ruins of the past into a contemporary architectural form, creating a permanent environmental installation on the site of the former city.
