The complex originated as a Benedictine monastery in the 12th century before undergoing transformations into a castle and eventually a chateau. Its architectural evolution is reflected in a diverse range of styles, including Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, and Gothic Revival elements. Notable structural features include a preserved Romanesque crypt and a chateau theater.
Since 1947, the building has housed the Regional Museum. The museum maintains extensive permanent exhibitions and collections focused on palaeontology, archaeology, and art. Specific displays are dedicated to the history of the region, including the local spa culture and historical artifacts.
The site includes preserved historical chateau interiors and is surrounded by a park. The facility is open to the public for exploration of its architectural heritage and museum galleries.
