The shrine is the largest Marian site in the region and serves as a prominent Maronite Catholic pilgrimage destination. Established in 1904, the sanctuary functions as a major spiritual center and has hosted multiple papal visits.
The site features a massive 15-tonne bronze statue of the Virgin Mary positioned atop a conical chapel. A large modern basilica stands adjacent to the monument. The grounds are situated on a vantage point providing panoramic views of the coast and the bay.
