Basílica da Imaculada Conceição

This Neo-Gothic minor basilica, also known as the Upper Church, was constructed between 1862 and 1871. Designed by architect Hippolyte Durand, the building is the oldest basilica in the sanctuary complex and stands directly above the Grotto of Massabielle. The site is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, a title revealed to Bernadette Soubirous during reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary in 1858.

The architecture is characterized by a spire reaching approximately 70 meters and a series of stained-glass windows that depict the history of the pilgrimage. The interior, which has a capacity for 550 people, is decorated with mosaics and votive tablets. The structure serves as a central point for pilgrimage activities focused on messages of peace, hope, and healing, welcoming millions of pilgrims annually.

The building is part of a larger religious complex that includes gardens, historical resources, and youth facilities. The site is open to the public, and an information center provides assistance for inquiries. Ongoing development and renovation projects aim to preserve the heritage and enhance the places of worship. Prayer intentions and donation opportunities are also available at the sanctuary.
