Acest templu ionic abundent în decorațiuni este situat în apropierea spațiului în care Atena și Poseidon s-au luptat pentru titlul de protector al cetății Atena. Atena a oferit cetățenilor un măslin, fiind astfel aleasă să conducă orașul spre deosebire de Poseidon, care a creat un izvor cu tridentul său. Erechtheum a fost închinat amândurora.
