Our Lady of Laves

This historic Catholic church is widely known as The Miracle Church due to its survival during the April 1977 eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. During this event, a lava flow surrounded the structure and reached the doorstep, reportedly stopping just inside the nave without destroying the building.

The original structure dates back to 1927, though it required reconstruction after being damaged by a cyclone in 1948. It serves as a significant landmark and a site of both religious and historical interest, illustrating the unique geological impact of volcanic activity on the region.

The site houses the statue of the Vierge au parasol. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the local heritage and remains a prominent cultural monument open to the public.
