Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha

The church is a National Monument, classified as such since 1910. It is widely recognized for its survival during the 1755 earthquake, specifically its Manueline facade, which remained intact while much of the surrounding area was destroyed. The building serves as a significant example of religious architecture, blending historical elements from the former Church of the Misericórdia and the Church of Conceição dos Freires.

The architectural style is predominantly Manueline, characterized by an ornate portico and decorative elements similar to those found at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Following the earthquake, the structure underwent reconstruction around 1770. This project was ordered by King Joseph (King of Portugal) and designed by the Pombaline architect Francisco António Ferreira.

Originally established as the Church of the Misericórdia, the site was reassigned to the monks of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição during the post-earthquake urban reorganization. Once renovations were completed, the clerics occupied the rebuilt space, and the Brotherhood of the Misericórdia moved to the Church of São Roque.
