Established in 2008, this museum complex is situated on the former palace grounds of King Mutara III Rudahigwa. The site features a reconstructed traditional royal residence modeled after a 19th-century hut, alongside a modern palace constructed in the 1930s. These buildings illustrate the architectural transition of the Rwandan royal court.

A central component of the museum is the herd of Inyambo cattle, sacred long-horned cows that serve as a significant symbol of Rwandan culture. These royal animals are traditionally accompanied by the performance of specific songs and poems.
