Skopje Fortress

The fortification is located on the Gradište hill at the city's highest point, within walking distance of the city center. Archaeological evidence indicates that the site has been inhabited since the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, with the primary defensive structures dating back to the 6th century under the Roman Empire. The site contains architectural remnants from the Byzantine, medieval, and Ottoman periods.

As a prominent cultural landmark, the site is depicted on the city's coat of arms and flag. Its elevated position provides a wide panoramic view of the Vardar River and the Old Bazaar. It has historically served as a significant defensive and administrative center.

The grounds are open to the public and function as a venue for various cultural activities. These include concerts and theater performances held within the fortification walls. Ongoing archaeological excavations continue to reveal layers of the site's history.
