The museum is a National Cultural Monument housed in a significant Secession-style building modeled on a classic temple. Designed by the prominent architect Jan Kotěra, it was constructed between 1909 and 1912 and features a functionalist interior. The institution itself dates back to 1880 and has been recognized as a national monument since 1995.
The collections encompass broad fields including archaeology, history, and natural sciences. Permanent exhibitions and seasonal displays provide insights into the culture and heritage of the Eastern Bohemia region. The museum also manages the Memorial of the 1866 Battle of Chlum.
Educational programs and a scenic roof terrace are available, with the terrace accessible during the summer months. The facility is open to the public as a regional museum institution.
