Hanging Coffins of Sagada

This ancient burial site features hand-carved coffins made from hollowed-out logs suspended from limestone cliff faces. Established by the Igorot people, specifically the Applai-Kankana-ey tribe, this pre-Hispanic tradition reflects the belief that placing the deceased at a higher elevation brings them closer to heaven.

The positioning and height of the coffins can serve as an indicator of the social status of the departed. This centuries-old funeral custom is preserved as a significant cultural heritage site, providing insight into indigenous ritualistic traditions and traditional funeral rites.

The site is situated within Echo Valley, where the coffins remain attached to vertical rock walls. Guided tours are available to provide information regarding the traditional death and burial ceremonies of the local tribes.
