This traditional walled town served as the capital of Jeongui-hyeon for approximately 500 years, beginning in the 1400s. It remains an inhabited village where residents live in historic homes that preserve the architectural characteristics of old Jeju. The settlement features traditional hanok buildings and winding olle alleyways, with several houses designated as National Folk Cultural Properties.
Notable landmarks within the village include Ilgwanheon, a former government office, and a thousand-year-old zelkova tree known as Cheonnyeonsu. The site is recognized for both its tangible structures and intangible cultural heritage, which includes traditional craftsmanship and local culinary traditions.
Cultural heritage is maintained through historical reenactments, traditional craft demonstrations, and hanok stays. The village functions as an immersive site for experiencing traditional Korean life and is frequently included on organized cultural tours.
