Grand Marché

The marketplace is a multi-level hall situated in the Assigamé quarter of downtown Lomé, positioned a few streets from the Sacred Heart Cathedral and the seafront. It serves as the city's primary commercial center and is open to the public, consisting of a central building surrounded by a dense network of outdoor street stalls and small shops.

The site is globally recognized for its wax-print cloth trade. This sector is characterized by the presence of the Nana Benz, a group of influential and wealthy women cloth traders. Stalls throughout the area also provide a variety of local crafts, clothing, and food items.

As the liveliest area in the city, the market is characterized by significant crowds and high levels of activity. Bargaining is a standard practice for most transactions. Due to the density of people and its status as a major public hub, awareness regarding pickpockets is necessary, as historical security incidents have been noted in the vicinity.
