Пурана-Кила

This ancient fortress stands on a site historically identified with Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Mahabharata period. While archaeological evidence suggests roots dating back to the 3rd century BC, the current structure was primarily developed in the 16th century. It served as the inner citadel of the city of Dinpanah under the Mughal emperor Humayun and was later expanded by Sher Shah Suri, the founder of the Sur Empire, between 1540 and 1545.

The fort is characterized by its roughly rectangular layout, massive gateways, and thick ramparts. The architecture represents a synthesis of Mughal, Hindu, and Afghan styles. Notable structures within the walls include the Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque and the Sher Mandal, an octagonal building that served as an observatory. Ancient excavations on the grounds have uncovered artifacts from various historical layers of the city.

As a designated National Monument, the site is open to the public. A spectacular sound and light show is held daily in the evenings, detailing the historical narrative of the fortification.
