Batu Caves

A stunning complex of caves serving as one of the most-visited Hindu shrines. Containing three main caves and several smaller ones, it is an absolute must-see, especially when the Thaipusam festival takes place.

The festival is celebrated on the full moon during the Thai month (January or February) and attracts worshippers who bring various "kavadis" (literally a physical burden) with them. They can carry milk jugs as sacrifices or pierce their skin, tongues, and cheeks with skewers.

Arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat and be prepared to meet macaque monkeys who will be after any peanuts or bananas you have in your backpack. Also, as it is a religious site, don't forget about an appropriate dress code and cover your legs and shoulders when entering the temples. You can get here by train from KL Sentral.
