Established over two millennia ago by Herod the Great in the 1st century BCE, this site served as a major Roman administrative center and the capital of Roman Judaea for over 650 years. It was a significant intellectual hub in the Mediterranean and later functioned as a Crusader fortress until the 13th century.
The park contains extensive archaeological remains, including a Roman theater, a hippodrome, and an ancient aqueduct. The site also features fortifications from the Crusader era and the remains of a palace. The ancient harbor, which was a central maritime facility in antiquity, is one of the primary historical features.
Preserved as a national park, the area showcases findings from the Roman, Byzantine, and Crusader periods. The site is open to the public and includes modern amenities alongside its historical and natural features.
