The cathedral was constructed between 1830 and 1836 in the Neoclassical style, specifically following Russian architectural traditions. Designed by the architect Avraam Melnikov, the building is a national monument of architectural significance. It features a large central dome and serves as the primary place of worship for the Moldovan Orthodox Church.
During the Soviet era, the building was repurposed as an exhibition center before being returned to its religious purpose in 1989. The structure is located within Cathedral Park, positioned near the Great National Assembly Square as a central historical and spiritual landmark.
As the seat of the Metropolitan of Chișinău and All Moldova, the cathedral serves as the administrative center for the church. The site remains an active religious institution and is used for regular liturgical services and major ecclesiastical events.
