Sacro Monte of Orta

This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of a monumental sequence of twenty chapels dedicated to the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The complex is recognized as a shrine, church building, and religious museum, serving as a stop-over on the CoEur devotional path. The site is open to the public.

The chapels contain high-quality Mannerist and Baroque artworks, including sculptures and paintings produced by prominent artists of those periods. The architecture is designed to reflect Franciscan spirituality through a blend of decorative elements and structured devotional spaces.

The site is characterized by an integrated landscape design where ornamental vegetation follows the natural terrain down toward the shore. This setting was specifically planned to complement the architectural features, creating a harmonious balance between art and nature.
