The museum is housed in the Johannbau, the only surviving wing of the former Residenzschloss Dessau. Originally built in 1341, the palace served as the main residence for the Princes and Dukes of Anhalt-Dessau. The Johannbau wing is recognized as one of the earliest examples of Renaissance architecture in Central Germany.
Following significant restoration, the building now functions as the Museum of City History (Museum für Stadtgeschichte). The palace complex underwent numerous modifications and reconstructions over several centuries, though only this specific wing remains today to represent the former princely residence.
The site is open to the public and serves as a historical landmark documenting the local history and the architectural heritage of the region.
