Starý bazar

This historic district has served as a center for trade and commerce since the 12th century and flourished significantly under Ottoman rule. It stands as the largest bazaar in the Balkans outside of Istanbul, characterized by a network of narrow cobblestone streets and a unique architectural blend of Ottoman and Byzantine styles.

Key cultural and historical landmarks within the district include the Bezisten, a traditional covered market, and the Chihte-amam, a former Turkish bath. The bazaar also contains several centuries-old mosques, caravanserais (hans), and traditional Turkish baths. Many of these historic structures now house art galleries and museums dedicated to the region's heritage.

The bazaar remains a vibrant center for traditional crafts, with numerous workshops and shops lining the streets. It functions as a living marketplace where trade and social life continue alongside modern urban elements. The district is open for public exploration and is recognized as a Cultural Heritage Site and national monument.
