The Garoé is a sacred tree historically revered by the Bimbaches for its ability to collect water from clouds and fog. This natural phenomenon provided a vital water source for the local inhabitants. The original tree, a specimen of Ocotea foetens (commonly known as til or stinkwood), fell in 1610 during a hurricane.
In 1957, a new specimen was planted in the same location to maintain its cultural and historical status as a National Monument. The tree belongs to the Lauraceae family and is an evergreen species that can reach heights of up to 40 meters in its natural laurisilva forest habitat.
