Bohato zdobený iónsky chrám sa nachádza neďaleko miesta, kde Aténa a Poseidon bojovali o titul ochrancu Atén. Aténa darovala obyvateľom Atén olivovník a tí ju uprednostnili pred Poseidonom, ktorý svojím trojzubcom vytvoril prameň. Erechtheion je venovaný im obom.
