เมื่อวันที่ 11 กุมภาพันธ์ ค.ศ. 1929 นครรัฐวาติกันและอิตาลีได้ลงนามสนธิสัญญายอมรับสถานะของนครรัฐวาติกันเป็นรัฐเอกราชมีอำนาจอธิปไตยของตนเอง
สมเด็จพระสันตะปาปาจูเลียสที่ 2 ทรงก่อตั้งพิพิธภัณฑ์ในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 16 ชาเปลซิสตินและห้องราฟาเอล เป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่ผู้เข้าชมพิพิธภัณฑ์จะได้เห็น
