The building was originally the home of Meir Dizengoff, the city's first mayor, and his wife Zina. Between 1932 and 1971, the structure served as the city's primary art museum before being transitioned into its current role as a historical landmark.
The site gained significance on May 14, 1948, when David Ben-Gurion read and signed the Declaration of Independence, officially establishing the state. The ceremony took place within the main hall, making it a central location in the history of the country's founding.
The museum is open to the public and contains a restored version of the hall where the signing occurred. Exhibits focus on the events of the declaration ceremony, the legacy of Meir Dizengoff, and the history of the state and the city's founding. The institution has functioned as a dedicated museum since 1978.
