This UNESCO World Heritage site was originally constructed between 1184 and 1185. The architectural complex showcases a unique blend of styles resulting from centuries of additions and alterations, including Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Gothic, Catalan, Baroque, and Neoclassical elements. It serves as the archiepiscopal seat and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The cathedral is a significant religious site housing the relics of Saint Rosalia. One of its most distinctive internal features is a historical astronomical meridian line, an instrument used to track solar time. The building is officially designated as the Basilica Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale della Santa Vergine Maria Assunta.
The complex contains a series of royal and imperial tombs. Notable figures interred here include the Holy Roman Emperors Henry VI and Frederick II, as well as Empress Constance of Sicily. The site is recognized as part of the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale UNESCO designation.
