This 17th-century Dutch fortress is a pentagonal structure built along the banks of the river. Over the centuries, the site has transitioned through several roles, serving as a trading post, military barracks, and a prison. The surrounding area is characterized by traditional Dutch colonial architecture.
Since 1995, the site has been home to the Surinaams Museum. Its interior houses extensive ethnographic collections, including artifacts from colonial, indigenous, and Maroon cultures. Displays also feature various sculptures and artworks that document the historical development and cultural heritage of the region.
The complex is a designated National Monument and serves as a significant site for historical remembrance, specifically concerning the December murders of 1982. It currently operates as an open-air museum, offering exhibits on the path to independence and colonial history.
