The fortress is situated on the Gradište hill. Archaeological evidence indicates that the site has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, while the primary fortifications date back to the 6th century during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.
The site functions as a significant cultural landmark that preserves layers of archaeological history. Its elevated position provides a wide panoramic view of the surrounding city landscape and the Vardar River.
