Established in 2003 through the merger of several national institutions, this cultural center opened in its current brutalist building on June 11, 2022. The structure was designed by architects Klaus Schuwerk and Kleihues + Kleihues. It serves as a major national repository, bringing together collections of art, architecture, and design under one roof.
The museum houses an extensive collection of over 400,000 works ranging from antiquity to the present day. The exhibits provide a chronological journey through art history alongside selected international pieces. Notable highlights include iconic works by the painter Edvard Munch, such as 'The Scream'.
The institution maintains a comprehensive archive of older, modern, and contemporary art, as well as specialized collections for design and architecture. It showcases both national and international artistic developments across various eras and mediums.
