The fortress is situated on a rocky spur overlooking the Vienne river and comprises three distinct structures: Fort du Coudray, Château du Milieu, and Fort Saint-Georges. Founded in the 10th century, the site evolved from Gallo-Roman origins into a significant medieval stronghold. It served as the continental capital for the Plantagenet empire and was a primary residence for the counts of Anjou and English kings, including Henri II Plantagenêt.
Throughout its history, the fortress functioned as a strategic military site and a royal refuge. It notably served as a prison for the Knights Templar and later provided a refuge for Charles VII. Following extensive restoration, the site is open to the public.
The grounds include historic halls and a series of ramparts. Immersive and interactive experiences are available on-site, such as historical reenactments and escape games themed around the Middle Ages.
