Founded in the late 11th century by the Byzantine emperor Alexios I Komnenos, this Greek Orthodox institution is recognized as a wealthy and lavish religious foundation. Although no remains of the original structure exist due to several fires over the centuries, the site continues to serve as a prominent center for the Church of Cyprus.
The monastery is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and houses a highly revered, miracle-working icon of the Panagia Eleousa. This sacred object is traditionally attributed to the Apostle Luke. The architectural complex is a significant example of Byzantine architecture and functions as a primary site for religious pilgrimage.
An ecclesiastical museum on the grounds contains a significant collection of antiquities, including ancient icons, manuscripts, and various religious relics. Archbishop Makarios III, the first president of the country, began his religious path here as a novice.
