Built in 1465 by King Louis XI on the foundations of a 10th-century fortress, this Flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance castle is a significant example of late medieval architecture. The structure retains well-preserved defensive features, including machicolations and a functional drawbridge. It is currently owned by the Institut de France and is classified as a national monument.
The interior consists of numerous rooms furnished to reflect the daily life of a 15th-century prince, highlighted by monumental chimneypieces. Historically, the castle served as the venue for the 1491 marriage between King Charles VIII and Anne of Brittany. This union was a pivotal event that led to the end of Brittany's independence.
The surrounding grounds include a park and a reconstructed 15th-century garden. The park is home to the remains of the oldest stone keep, dating back to the 10th century. The property is open to the public, allowing for the exploration of both the furnished residential quarters and the historical fortifications.
