Established in 1932, this cultural history museum serves as the regional museum for Central Finland and the city museum of Jyväskylä. The current building, designed by architect Alvar Aalto, was completed in 1961 and officially opened in 1962. It functions as part of the Aalto2 Museum Centre, a collaborative hub that connects this institution with the neighboring Alvar Aalto Museum to showcase architecture, design, and cultural heritage.
The museum is open to the public and contains permanent and temporary exhibitions focusing on regional history. The permanent exhibition, Keskisuomalaisuutta etsimässä, explores local identity through various historical lenses. Collections include digital displays and interactive audiovisual exhibits that detail the development of the area. The building itself is a noted architectural landmark, reflecting Aalto's vision of a forum for multiple art forms.
