The site consists of four nearly identical rococo palaces arranged around an octagonal courtyard, built in 1760. It serves as the main winter residence for the Danish royal family and houses museums showcasing royal history and artifacts. A large equestrian statue of King Frederik V is prominently located in the palace square. The palace is notable for its architectural style designed by Nicolai Eigtved and the daily changing of the guard ceremony held in the historic courtyard.
