Established in 1549, the current structure of this minor basilica was built in the mid-18th century on the ruins of a 16th-century predecessor. Construction began in 1743 and was completed in 1753, though a single tower was later added to the complex in 1885. The building is a prominent example of Barroco Mestizo or Andean Baroque architecture, characterized by a carved stone facade featuring intricate nature motifs.
The site houses a museum and an art gallery containing a valuable collection of works. The complex also functions as a convent and monastery. Within the temple lie the remains of the revolutionary hero Pedro Domingo Murillo.
The church and its associated facilities are open to the public. The rooftops provide panoramic views of the surrounding city. The architectural style represents a unique blend of Spanish baroque and indigenous elements, reflecting the colonial history of the region.
