Built between 1478 and 1483 by Emperor Frederick III to fortify the border, the structure originally served as an administrative court and part of the defensive system. Over time, the building underwent several modifications, transforming from a fortification into a residential castle with Baroque architectural elements. The complex includes courtyards, defensive structures, and a garden.
The interior features a knight's hall, a Loreto chapel, and a collection of rich paintings. Today, the building houses the Maribor Regional Museum (Pokrajinski muzej Maribor), which presents the history of the castle and the surrounding region through its various collections.
As one of the largest and most prominent landmarks, the castle is designated as a Cultural Heritage Site. It is open to the public and functions primarily as a museum space.
