Dating back to the 14th century, this medieval hilltop castle began as a single tower. In the 15th century, it was significantly expanded by Vlad III, also known as Vlad the Impaler, who transformed the site into a major fortress and secondary residence. The construction is associated with Radu Negru and served as a critical defense point and refuge against the Ottoman Empire.
The ruins are situated in a strategic, almost inaccessible position overlooking the Argeș Valley. The fortification's design utilized the natural mountain terrain to create a formidable stronghold. As a designated National Monument, the site preserves the remains of medieval stone walls and defensive structures.
Access to the ruins is provided via a concrete staircase consisting of 1,480 steps. This path leads to the summit, where the historical ruins overlook the surrounding landscape and the valley below.
