Originally established as a stronghold in 1228, the site was transformed into a Gothic castle in 1359. During the 14th century, it underwent significant reconstruction to become one of the most elaborately constructed noble residences. The structure later integrated Renaissance and Baroque styles before suffering extensive damage during the Hussite Wars and the Thirty Years' War. By the late 18th century, the castle became deserted and began to deteriorate.
The ruin is notable for its unique valley location and its position on a rocky spur. Its defensive architecture includes artillery bastions and a preserved core that reflects medieval aristocratic life. It is designated as a protected cultural monument.
The site is freely accessible to the public. It serves as a venue for open-air festivals and historical events.
