The memorial marks the grave of František Pavlík (1885–1905), a Moravian joiner and member of the Sokol gymnastics movement who became a martyr for the Czech-language university campaign. On 1 October 1905, during clashes between demonstrators and the military, Pavlík was stabbed with a bayonet by a soldier of the Imperial-Royal army. He died of his wounds the next day. His funeral procession drew an estimated 80,000 mourners, turning his death into a powerful symbol for the movement that eventually led to the founding of a Czech university in 1919.

The tragedy deeply moved composer Leoš Janáček, who is also buried in the same cemetery. He dedicated his piano sonata "1. X. 1905" (also known as "From the Street") to Pavlík's memory. This site is designated as an Honorary Grave and serves as a significant place of remembrance for the struggle for national cultural identity. The grave is accessible to the public.
