Formed by the merger of several national institutions, the museum is housed in a brutalist building designed by architects Klaus Schuwerk and Kleihues + Kleihues. The structure opened on June 11, 2022, and serves as the state's public repository for art, architecture, and design.
The collection consists of over 400,000 works ranging from antiquity to the present day. It maintains a comprehensive archive of older, modern, and contemporary art, as well as specialized collections for design and architecture.
Notable highlights include iconic works by the painter Edvard Munch, such as 'The Scream'. The institution also houses significant pieces by international artists including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet.
