The museum is established in Silkeborg Hovedgård, a historic building constructed in 1767. Its primary attraction is the collection of well-preserved Iron Age bog bodies, most notably the Tollund Man and the Elling Woman. The institution was founded in 1904 and operates across three distinct sites: the main manor house, the Blicheregnen farm, and the Papirmuseet (Paper Museum).

Archaeological exhibitions cover a broad chronological range from the Stone Age and Iron Age through the Viking Age and Middle Ages. Displays include regional history, ancient crafts, and industrial heritage. The museum also maintains programming related to the Cold War and hosts cultural events such as the Nybyggerdage festival.

The site at Hovedgården focuses on cultural history and significant archaeological finds. The Papirmuseet provides insights into industrial history, while the Blicheregnen site offers perspectives on regional history and ancient crafts. All three locations are open to the public.
